In our country, we have abundant freedoms of choice—what to eat, drink, wear, travel, where go to school, who we will marry, what career to persue and where to live. No other culture in history has been so blessed with such variety and freedom of opportunity.
In Bible history, great men of faith had the freedom to make their own choices. Too often, they chose poorly. Abraham, Moses, David... they all blew it! And they suffered the consequences. King David knew full well of God's design of the "one man, one woman" relationship Genesis 2:24 and the commandment to not covet another man's wife Exodus 20:17 nor to commit adultery. Exodus 20:14 But after he violated each of these with Bathsheba 2Samuel 11:2-5 he committed yet another Exodus 20:13 with his devious plot to cover-up the resulting pregnancy, 2Samuel 11:6-26 Eventually, David responded in greivance over his sin—committed against God himself. Psalm 51:3-4 Never did God compromise His standards, yet when each of these men repented and turned their hearts back towards Him, God extended to them great mercy. That's amazing grace. Romans 3:23-24
The two criminals that were crucified on each side of Jesus represent the two biggest choices we can make. Matthew 27:38 Both were being punished for the crimes they had committed. The difference is in their choices of how they responded to Jesus. They both had ridiculed Him while on their crosses. Matthew 27:43-44 But one repented. Luke 23:40-42 For the one that believed, Paradise was soon to be his new home. Luke 23:43
Our culture offers many choices that are not negotiable with God. Of course one of the biggest chasms between worldviews is the issue of abortion. The worldview of moral relativism allows for a woman to terminate her pregnancy—and our current laws allow for it. But in a Biblical worldview, if there's something that man permits that God forbids, God rules. No compromise.
Doesn't a pregnant woman have the right to choose what she does with her own body? Absolutely. In God's design, we naturally desire to care for ourselves—even to the degree of self preservation if our lives are threatened.
But, the human within the pregnant woman's body is not part of her body. This pre-born child is genetically distinct with its own blood type, bone-structure, gender and soul. It maintains it's unique genetic code from the moment of conception through it's entire life. Although the baby is attached to its mother and dependent on her for nourishment, it's a singular body—apart from hers. Psalm 139:13-16
So, what if the baby is unwanted? or an inconvenience? The condition of pregnancy may indeed be unplanned and unwanted, but the life suspended in the womb is independently, yet equally as valuable as the mother's life. What about a pregnant woman who is murdered? If the baby dies, the accused is convicted of a double homicide. Is the baby who is 'wanted' deemed human, but the 'unwanted' baby not human? Unfortunately, the fetus who is sucking his thumb to practice eating, yawning to prepare for breathing, and stretching his limbs to strengthen for reaching and walking—doesn't get to choose. Her heart is beating, her blood is flowing, her organs are functioning and her brainwaves are active—but just can't yet speak for herself. Jeremiah 1:5
God calls us to defend the defenseless—whether it be the mentally handicapped, physically challenged, orphans, widows, homeless, the elderly, or the pre-born.
